Rimini's hinterland is a small world to discover, made up of castles, medieval fortresses, and gastronomic specialities. Here is a short list of the most beautiful small towns and villages, all within easy reach of the Hotel Beaurivage.

Santarcangelo di Romagna

Between caves and quarters

Santarcangelo di Romagna is one of the largest towns in the Marecchia Valley. The ancient centre occupies Mount Giove, from which the name of the area's typical wine, Sangiovese, is said to derive. The mountain is crossed by dozens of underground hypogea dug into the tuffstill of mysterious origins. To visitas well as caves open to the public, the Pieveone of the oldest houses of worship in the area, the malatesta fortressthe tower of the Campanonethe Capuchin Convent, l'old Marchi print shop and the MUSASarchaeological museum.

Montebello

Breathtaking panorama and legend

Montebello is a small town that huddles around its castle.

Montebello Castle has a medieval and a Renaissance part, with furnishings from the period. There are two types of guided tours: one during the day and historical-cultural, the other at night and focused on the story of Azzurrina, a little girl who lived here in the Middle Ages and who disappeared in mysterious circumstanceswhose ghost is said to still inhabit the ancient fortress.

Saint Leo

The Fortress that inspired Dante

Saint Leo is a town that stands on a gigantic spur which can be reached by a single road carved into the rock. Suggestive like few other towns, San Leo inspired Dante when describing his Purgatory; here Cagliostro died, imprisoned in the fortress prisons. To visitin addition to this last imposing construction, also the Cathedral and the Parish Church.

San Marino

Medieval charm

San Marino is a small city-state with the profile of Mount Titan, with its three peaks, is always clearly visible from Riminifrom which it is some 20 kilometres away. a beautiful panorama of the entire coastline and strolling through the narrow streets narrow streets of the centre, it is impossible not to be tempted to go shopping. There is a nice walk between the towers, highly recommended.

Gradara

Imagining Paolo and Francesca

Gradara is located inland from Cattolica and is a small town dominated by an astonishing manor houseone of the best preserved in Italy. It is a superb example of 14th century military architecture and is famous for the love story between Paolo and Francesca, recounted by Dante in The Divine Comedy, is said to have taken place here. Today Gradara hosts many events that attract many people every year.

Ancient Ariminum, a gift of beauty

Walking around the centre of Rimini you will be amazed to encounter numerous testimonies dating back to the Roman Empire. One is theAugustus Arch dating back to 27 BC and located at the intersection of the Via Emilia and the Via Flaminia. With its imposing structure, made of Istrian stone, the brick parts added in the Middle Ages, including the battlements, are still visible in the arch. Another important Roman monument is the Tiberius Bridgealso made of Istrian stone, with five arches, built in 21 A.D., one of the most remarkable Roman bridges that have survived.
